Inside the Classics

I’m about to begin blogging more regularly as we head toward the beginning of the Inside the Classics season, and toward the MicroCommission premiere. I have a lot to tell you all about the piece and how it’s developing, and also about some of the topics that will appear in the first Inside the Classics concert. Oh, and Sam and I have another plan for how to use this space….which he’ll reveal soon. For now, this is just a quick note to let any MicroCommission fans who are in St. Peter or Northfield (or nearby) that there are going to be opportunities tonight and tomorrow night to hear my Sonata for Cello and Piano, at Gustavus Adolphus and Carleton colleges, performed by the incredible cellist Jeffrey Ziegler, along with pianist Nicola Melville. Jeff is best-known these days as the cellist in the legendary Kronos Quartet; he’s their newest member and has brought an incredible energy and passion to the position. He also appears regularly with Vision Into Art (VIA), and when time allows, he gives solo or chamber performances, such as these.

I’m honored that he’s chosen to include among his repertoire the Sonata, which is one of my favorites among my own pieces. I wrote it in 2003, when I was 24 years old, and it was a huge step forward for me in a number of ways. The piece has a very specific formal structure that reflects aspects of time, memory, and one’s personal response to the tragic events that life sometimes presents. More technically, the way that themes move across movements in the Sonata is quite related to aspects of my MicroCommission piece; the more I think about it, the more I realize that I’ve taken a lot from the Sonata, formally, in my conception of this new orchestral work that I’m writing for your community. So it would provide a useful context for next March — a happy coincidence!

More information is here. If anyone gets a chance to hear the performances, please leave a comment, I’d love to hear about it!
