What to Know about This Weekend's Concerts: February 3-5
Dance in Music

-This will be the second of three Friday Favorites concerts designed to take a look at how music is inspired by other art forms. In this program conducted by Associate Conductor Sarah Hicks, we hear how dance informs music.

-Polovtsian Dances are the best known selections from Alexander Borodin's opera, Prince Igor. In the opera, they are performed with a chorus, but we will perform them as a stand alone concert piece. Get ready--they are wild and Russian. You may want to hop out of your seat for some kazatskis (those impossible squat kicks)! The Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto No. 2 will feature pianist Valentina Lisitsa. A rising star in the classical world, Lisitsa has been described by critics as "a bona fide angel playing," and an "electrifying pianist." Born in the Ukraine, Lisitsa now makes her home in New Bern, where she gardens, cooks Italian food and makes beautiful music.

-Debussy's Prelude to The Afternoon of a Faun has been interpreted and re-interpreted again and again in a dance format. It was originally intended as music for a ballet set on the extraordinary Vaslav Nijinsky, choreographed by Sergei Diaghilev. Parisians were initially scandalized by his performance in this work, but both the ballet and Debussy's gorgeous music live on.

-The concert closes with Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird, arguably one of the world's greatest ballet scores and long considered the composer's breakthrough work. Even as the production was being readied, Diaghilev was heard to say to Tamara Karsavina, the dancer in the title role: "Mark [Stravinsky] well. He is a man on the eve of celebrity." The rest, as the say, is history.
