New York Times classical music critic Anthony Tommasini wrapped up his 2-week long project to choose the Top 10 composers (none living – he feels that we don’t have enough historical perspective for living composers) today with this definitive list (well, it’s an article, but it’s not too long, really. Read the whole thing, his reasoning is interesting.)

Any omissions or head-scratchers? Although I mostly agree, from a musicological point of view, I wonder about the absence of Schoenberg (or any of the serialists) – perhaps not under the banner of “greatest”, but “most influential”? And for my own two cents, the leader of my “tremendously underestimated” category is Liszt. Fire away, musical friends…
